Cogito Program

Cogito Program Information

The Cogito Alternative Program is an academic program based on whole-group, teacher-directed instruction in a structured setting. It provides a knowledge-based, enriched curriculum, with an emphasis on phonics, spelling, grammar, and computational and problem-solving skills. Daily homework is integral to the program.

Meyokumin School is delighted to offer Punjabi Language and Culture classes to students at our school. In the Cogito Program, students may join the Punjabi Culture and Language lunch hour class in Grade 2 or 3.  Starting in Grade 4, Cogito students may register for Punjabi Language classes which occur during instructional time as well as one lunch hour class per week.

The Cogito Program is very popular with many families and our school facilities are at capacity. In order to accommodate as many interested families as possible, there is a registration process which starts at the beginning of February.  Parents are encouraged to indicate their interest in the 2024 - 2025 school year by completing the registration forms starting February 1 (please see "Registration" tab under "For parents").  Registration packages must be received by 4 p.m. on March 22, 2024 to be included in the districts random selection draw.

Meyokumin School strictly adheres to Edmonton Public School Board regulations regarding entrance into schools participating in the random selection process as well as the designated school policies. Additional information is available on Edmonton Public Schools' website at http://cogito.epsb.ca/

More information on registration is available at the Registration portion of this website.

KINDERGARTEN 'MEETINGS FOR SUCCESS'

All Kindergarten applicants interested in the Cogito Program will be required to participate in a 'Meeting for Success'. This is an opportunity for prospective students to engage in age-appropriate tasks presented in a Cogito setting while being observed by the teachers. School Administration will use the evidence and observations collected during the ‘Meeting for Success’ to engage parents in a conversation about the child’s readiness for the expectations and demands of the program. These meetings are an important way to connect with our new families and students, and this connection is vital to student success in the Cogito program.
